Looe Key is an undersea nature preserve about half an
hour north of Key West. My diving buddies and I have
made a couple of trips down there in the last couple
of years.
Rainbow River is fed by fresh water that enters the ground in
Tennessee, gets filtered through rock all the way down to Florida,
and bubbles up through the sand here. That means it's always
72 degrees year-round and phenomenally clear. We did a drift
dive from the mouth of the river all the way down in January 1996.
Beginning in October of 1995, Disney World's Epcot Center
has allowed scuba diving in the Living Seas Experience,
the world's largest salt water aquarium. You guessed it --
we all got wet on January 10th, 1996.
